Director Identification Number

As part of its Digital Business Plan, the Australian Government announced the implementation of the Modernising Business Registry (MBR) Program. This included introducing the new mandatory Director Identification Number (DIN/Director ID), with the roll out starting from November 2021.

It is now a legal requirement for all new and existing Directors to hold a unique 15 digit identifier that you will need to apply for once and keep forever.

Only one DIN will be issued to each individual, once their identification has been verified. The issued DIN remains the same even if they stop being a company director, change their name or move overseas.

This applies to Directors of a company, body corporate or corporation. Directors of corporate trustees of self-managed super funds and of family trusts will need to apply. You do not need to apply if you are a partner in a Partnership.

Directors must apply for their Director ID themselves. No one can apply on their behalf, including registered agents and accountants.

The introduction of a DIN is intended to provide accountability and traceability of a director’s relationship over time, across all companies and provides information on a director’s involvement in any unlawful activities. It is intended to create a fairer business environment.
